NZ Olympic Athlete Luuka Jones has transitioned to a plant-based diet - what are the outcomes?

Luuka Jones

Luuka transitioned to a plant-based diet a couple of years ago (quite the story!). So naturally, I had to find out how it has been going for her as she is currently training for the Paris 2024 Olympics.

We cover:

  • New "extreme slalom" event at the Paris 2024 Olympics

  • Has it been easy to trust you are getting the nutrition you need from a plant-based way of eating?

  • Protein and iron as a plant-based athlete

  • Changes (or not) Luuka has noticed since eating a plant-based diet

  • Luuka's brand new book! Sustain: plant-based foods for active people

One-liners you don’t want to miss:

“When you are cooking meat that is the hero of the dish and you may add a few vegetable side dishes to it. When you are plant-based you have to put a bit more thought into it and you are consuming such a wider variety of vegetables and therefore nutrients”

“In high performance sport when you are looking for those 1%er’s, you put so much effort into training and competing, that you don’t want to fall off the horse by not eating well or fuelling yourself as it’s a huge component”

“People have this thing in their heads that they need massive amounts of protein in order to make gains and recover, but you don’t need that much protein in your diet.”
