The single biggest killer (heart disease) and what you can do in your 20s and 30s

Lily Henderson

“Heart disease takes years to develop, but the process starts in our 20s and 30s. When we are younger these years lay the foundation or the platform for heart health in our future years.”Our favourite one-liner from our chat with Lily Henderson, the National Nutrition Advisor at the Heart Foundation of New Zealand.

We cover:

  • Heart disease (which includes CHD, heart failure, valve disease, arrhythmias) prevalence - is it improving?

  • Do the number of heart attacks increase in the summer holidays?

  • Why people in their 20s and 30s should care about their heart health

  • What does high cholesterol in your 20s and 30s really mean?

  • Salt intake and the connection to your heart health

  • What foods do we get most of our salt from?

  • Should we be choosing iodised salt?

  • How does alcohol affect our heart health?

  • Getting the balance right when it comes to BBQ’ing this summer

  • Top three tips for reducing salt!

One-liners you don’t want to miss:

“About 1/23 people in NZ are living with heart disease. I guess it means that most of us affected in one way or another, whether it is a relative or someone in our network.”

“The Heart Foundation website has a great tool called “My Heart Check” for those over 30. This is a great place to start if you want to understand your risk.”

“Our heart disease risk can change throughout our life, so it is important to manage through our life, even if we are younger”

“Most specialty salts, like sea salt and Himalayan pink salt, aren’t iodised. Some of them are though, so if you are going to use one of these salts search for an iodised option.”

“Keep it really simple, a great option for BBQing is getting vegetables on the BBQ. There are so many good vegetables in season at the moment like corn, courgette, capsicum and eggplant”
